The Patterdale terrier is a rare breed that is gaining in popularity. If you are thinking of purchasing one or if you are considering becoming a breeder, you should know their history and traits. The patter dale terrier is a member of the working group, and they were bred about 75 years ago to protect sheep from ground prey, which would hide in the steep rocky fells of the United Kingdom. Patterdale terrier breeders do so for their love of the breed. These dogs are rarely shown because the devoted breeders are more concerned with the practicality traits of the dog rather than their appearance. In practicality terms, you should look for a strong head and an agile body that has the ability to fit into tight spaces.
Since this is a rare dog, you may have to travel across many states to find this breed. Patter dale terrier breeders can be found in California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Germany and, of course, the United Kingdom. Purchase prices range from $350 to $500. The breeders most often have puppies, and some will have adults and/or provide stud services.
If you are purchasing, as the new owner you need to ensure the paperwork is in order before you take your dog home. The Patterdale terrier breeders should give you the dog’s Pedigree information, a signed Registration application (which requires a $10 fee) and the Transfer of Ownership application (also requires a $10 fee). Make certain that any guarantees of the dog or stipulations to the purchase are also in writing. Many breeders will ask that you return a dog to them if you discover the dog is not a good fit into your family.
The Patterdale terrier is a friendly, intelligent and tenacious working dog. Although they are aloof with other dogs, they cannot be trusted around other animals with fur. But the people who have them are very loyal to the breed. If you are considering becoming one of the few Patterdale terrier breeders and would like a link to their website, the Patterdale Terrier Club of America (”PTCA”) requests that you have a current PTCA membership, own at least five PTCA registered Patterdale terriers, and at least one Titled Patterdale, either Working or Show. The PTCA membership yearly fee is $20, or $25 for breeders outside of the United States, and includes a quarterly newsletter entitled “THE BLACK DOG.”
