Patterdale terriers are a rather rare breed of dog. They are small dogs that are only about one foot tall, are a little longer than they are tall, and weigh about 11 to 13 pounds. Interestingly, their life expectancy is comprised of those same numbers. However, living approximately 11 to 13 years is a rather short period of time when compared to other small dogs. If you are considering a patterdale terrier mix, you will want to know more about the Patterdale terrior history. Since it was bred as a hunting dog, there are some traits that may not lend itself well to certain households.

Approximately 75 years ago the people of northern England and southern Scotland required a working dog. The economy there was agricultural, with sheep as its main commodity, and a dog was needed to ferret out the animals that would prey on their sheep. The dog needed to withstand the cold, windy, wet climate, as well as navigate steep and rocky hills. They required a dog that was small but sturdy, agile but strong. To fit these requirements, the Patterdale terrier breed was born in the United Kingdom. However, they are not recognized by the UK’s Kennel Club. If considering a Patterdale terrier mix, the owner may want the other breed to be from the non-sporting group. Every breed has its advantages and disadvantages. And that’s the great thing about mixed breed dogs; they tend to keep the best traits of a particular breed and lose those traits that some consider to be undesirable.

Patterdale terriers are friendly, intelligent and full of energy. Although they can come in different colors, they are mostly black, or black and tan. Their coats can be smooth or rough, but mostly short haired, and they don’t require a lot of grooming. They do not suffer from genetic defects as do other breeds. Their high energy requires that they have lots of daily exercise. If not, they can turn to mischief and their behaviors become inappropriate. A Patterdale terrier mix may ameliorate those behaviors. And since they are not easily obedience trained, a mix with a more passive breed could help to eliminate these propensities.

As their master, you must be a strong and confident pack leader. If not, a Patterdale terrier will think it is the alpha. The disadvantageous behaviors that could develop from this include excessive barking and escaping. A Patterdale terrier mix could stifle these responses. In addition, it could help the dog to live peacefully with other furry members of the family. Provided the right circumstances, it could be a good choice for your family.
