The Patterdale Terrier came to the U.S. in the 1950’s from Yorkshire, England. You can recognize this breed by its short, coarse, waterproof, black, red, tan or black and tan, shiny coat. It stands about 12 inches tall and weighs approximately 11-13 pounds full grown. It has a widely build body which is thicker than most terriers, with medium-sized feet and thick pads resting on solid legs.

It will dig in the yard or woods for underground animals. Patterdale terriers do get along with other terriers and can be kenneled with them without incident. However, don’t trust your terrier to be in the house alone with non-canine pets, as it will not be able to distinguish between other pets and wild animals.
The Patterdale Terrier is not a lap dog, and doesn’t love to cuddle up to family members, so if it is a cuddly dog you are looking for, then the Patterdale Terrier may not be for you.
The Patterdale Terrier requires little grooming. If you brush its coat with a rubber or firm type brush, it should remove any excess hair to reduce the shedding around your home. Be sure and check the cleanliness of its feet before allowing it to enter your house.
